The Elective Residency Visa is one of the most popular routes to Italian residency. An applicant must be able to show that they have at least €32,000 / annum from income earned outside Italy (more for a couple). Other conditions apply. This visa is especially popular with those seeking to retire to Italy, as well as self-employed workers and so-called digital nomads. The Italian government also offers tax incentives to these groups (see below).

Moving to Italy: Italian Naturalization & Citizenship
There are three main ways to naturalize as an Italian citizen through residency, through marriage and through ancestry. If you are of Italian ancestry you may be eligible for Italian citizenship through the law of blood (jure sanguinis). If you hold Italian residency through investment or through the Elective Residency Visa for sufficient time you can also apply for citizenship. Non-EU residents can apply to naturalize after maintaining residency for ten years, while European Union Citizens can apply for citizenship after just two years.
